If you’ve booked a maternity session—first of all, congratulations!

Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, documenting this season of waiting and growing is something you’ll never regret.

One of the most common questions I get after booking is:

"What should we wear for our maternity session?"

I’ve got you covered—literally.

Start with the dress: My client closet

Once your session is officially booked, you’ll have the option to schedule a styling consultation with me to try on pieces from my client closet. I’ve curated a beautiful and diverse selection of maternity dresses in a range of sizes, styles, and silhouettes. A few are especially stretchy and flexible, which means they can flatter a variety of body types and bump sizes.

Whether you’re envisioning something romantic and flowy, minimalist and modern, or soft and bohemian, we’ll find something that suits your personal style and the vibe you’re dreaming of.

Prefer to bring your own gown?

Not a problem. I recommend checking out these trusted maternity-friendly retailers:

  • Reclamation – Handmade, vintage-inspired dresses with stunning lace and texture.
  • Baltic Born – Beautiful bump-friendly options that can often be worn again after your session.
  • PinkBlush – Affordable, photo-worthy maternity styles with lots of color and sizing options.

Whatever you choose, be sure to try it on ahead of time and check for both comfort and movement—your dress should feel like you and allow for some natural, graceful posing.

Coordinating the rest of the fam

Once you’ve chosen your gown, it’s time to think about what the rest of your family should wear.

Here are a few tips:

Coordinate, don’t match. Choose complementary tones or soft patterns that look good with your dress but don’t match exactly.

Stick to a cohesive palette. Think earth tones, soft neutrals, or jewel tones that photograph beautifully in natural light.

Avoid bold logos and neon colors. These tend to distract from the emotion and beauty of the images.

Keep the setting in mind. Are we in an open field, by the water, or among trees? Consider how your colors will pop (or blend) with the location.

For dads or partners: linen shirts, henleys, or sweaters in solid colors pair well with most gowns.

Where to shop for kids' outfits

If you're looking to dress your little ones in something special that also photographs beautifully, here are some favorite places to shop:

Joyfolie – Romantic and vintage-inspired dresses for girls with lovely textures and movement.

Janie and Jack – Classic, polished styles that work great for dressier looks.

Little Planet by Carter’s – Carter’s new organic line offers simple, soft, and neutral-toned basics made with sustainability in mind.

Zara Kids – Trendy, minimalist pieces in muted color palettes and natural fabrics.

H&M Conscious Collection – Affordable options in earthy tones and easy-to-layer basics.

Keep it simple and comfortable—nothing stiff or overly fussy. Soft knits, cotton dresses, and cozy rompers tend to work beautifully.

Bonus Tips

Don’t forget your undergarments—nude or seamless works best under sheer or clingy fabrics.

Pay attention to wrists and feet—remove hair ties, watches, or clunky accessories that might date the photo.

Bring comfy shoes for walking to the location (you can change into barefoot or styled footwear once we arrive).
