"Can Fido come, too?!"

As a family photographer, I often get asked this question. My answer? Absolutely!

In fact, I want you to! If furry companions are part of your family, including them in your photo session will add that extra touch of meaningfulness and nostalgia every time you look back at those photos on the wall.

That said, bringing a pet to a photo session requires a little extra planning to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Here are a few tips to make the experience fun, stress-free, and picture-perfect!

1. Consider Your Dog’s Personality

Before bringing your pup along, think about their temperament. Are they well-behaved in new environments? Can they follow basic commands, or do they get anxious or overly excited around strangers? If your dog is particularly high-energy or nervous, you may want to bring along a friend or family member who can help handle them when they’re not in the shot.

2. we'll Choose a Pet-Friendly Location

Some locations are more pet-friendly than others. Certain parks, open fields, and wooded trails around Lebanon County--like Union Canal Tunnel Park or Stoever's Dam--for instance, would be great options.

3. Bring Essentials

To keep your pup happy and cooperative, pack the essentials: treats, a favorite toy, water, and waste bags. Treats are great for getting their attention, while a toy can help keep them engaged. Also, a well-fitted collar and leash are necessary, especially in open or public areas.

4. Grooming & Outfit Coordination

Just like the rest of the family, your pup should look their best! A quick brushing can go a long way in making their coat look clean and polished. If you’re planning outfit coordination, consider a stylish collar or bandana that matches your color scheme.

5. Be Patient & Have Fun

Dogs, like kids, don’t always follow directions perfectly—and that’s okay! Some of the best moments happen naturally, so be patient and let your pup’s personality shine. Whether they’re giving wet kisses, tilting their head curiously, or just happily sitting by your side, their presence will make your photos even more meaningful.

6. Have realistic expectations

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, a dog might not cooperate. They are very similar to toddlers in that way! 😜 We'll need to be adaptable to the situation. If your pup clearly needs a break or isn’t feeling the session, we can capture plenty of beautiful shots with and without them.
